The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday introduced its newest K-9 handler, Deputy Joshua Peet, who spent the morning showing off his new partner, DJ, a Belgian Malinois trained in narcotics detection.

Peet, hired in 2004, is taking over handling duties from Deputy Steve Faeth, who retired in January.

DJ and Peet have spent the last few months getting to know each other, and on their first day on the beat, DJ led deputies to a suspect hiding under a blanket and covered in brush and shrubs near a riverbed, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

DJ is one of six trained dogs within the K-9 unit.
