Atascadero police are stepping up bike and pedestrian safety operations today in areas identified as the most dangerous.
Extra officers will be on patrol, looking for violations and focusing on collision-causing factors involving motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.
Special attention will be given to speeding drivers, illegal turns, failing to heed signs and signals, and failing to yield to pedestrians, according to a news release.
Pedestrians jaywalking or failing to yield to rightof-way drivers also will be targeted, as will bicyclists not obeying helmet laws.
The news release said the Atascadero Police Department has investigated 41 pedestrian and bicyclist collisions that have resulted in serious injuries or fatalities in the past three years.
