The intersection in front of Nipomo High School is slated to get a traffic light, once county supervisors approve the project in April.
The Lucia Mar Unified School District Board of Trustees approved the plans at their meeting Tuesday night after hearing a presentation by district staff and project general manager Genaro Diaz of San Luis Obispo County Public Works and Transportation.
The project would be funded entirely by the county, Diaz said at the meeting.
The traffic light would be constructed in a 20-by-50-foot space on the southwest corner of Thompson Avenue and Titan Way to help regulate traffic at the intersection, which routinely backs up on both streets before and after school.
Currently, the intersection has one stop sign on Titan Way for cars turning on to Thompson Avenue, but no way to protect cars performing a left-hand turn from either street.
The county Board of Supervisors now has approximately four weeks to approve the plans as well. If approved, construction is slated for early 2016.
