A founder and manager of a fair-trade Yerba Mate product will be the grand marshals of this year’s Open House parade at Cal Poly.
Michael Newton, one of the founders of Guayaki, and Jose Sanchez, the Los Angeles area manager for the company, both Cal Poly alumni, will serve as grand marshals for the parade on April 18.
Guayaki got its start in San Luis Obispo in 1996 when Newton and four other Cal Poly classmates joined to create a tea product out of their passion for the Yerba Mate plant.
The company operates with the mission of using sustainable production practices while striving to make a profit.
Cal Poly’s Open House takes place April 16-18 and the parade starts at 9 a.m. on April 18, setting out from Grand Avenue and North Perimeter Road and then traveling north toward Via Carta, ending at Dexter Lawn.
