Man dies from fall off Pirate's Cove cliff

An 18 year-old man died Friday after falling from a cliff into the water at Pirate’s Cove near Avila Beach.

Witnesses saw the man, who has not been identified, walking along the cliff before he fell about 2:10 p.m., according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

A swimmer pulled the man to the shore, and the Port San Luis Harbor Patrol and Cal Fire responded and performed CPR. He was taken via boat to an ambulance waiting at the Port San Luis Pier. However, medics on scene pronounced the man deceased.

The victim is not being identified until his family can be notified.

The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing.

The death is similar to an Aug. 9, 2014, incident in which an unidentified woman was seen walking alone along a cliff before she fell 50 feet into a brushy area below the cliff’s edge.

Emergency personnel were able to reach her and take her to a nearby hospital. She survived, but suffered serious injuries.
