One bicyclist was killed and a second suffered major injuries when a Paso Robles man reached for his cellphone while driving an SUV and swerved into the cyclists on Nacimiento Lake Drive on Friday.

On Saturday, authorities still hadn’t released the name of the woman cyclist who was killed or where she lives, but her injured companion is Lawrence P. Chong, 59, of Seal Beach, according to the CHP.

The driver of the 2005 GMC Yukon, Joseph A. Mondo, 18, was not cited at the scene although the investigation into the collision is ongoing, the CHP said Saturday.

The incident began at about 3:10 p.m. when Mondo was driving westbound on Nacimiento Lake Drive east of Adelaida Road at about 60 mph when he was distracted by his cellphone sliding off his lap, according to the CHP.

As he started to reach for it he saw a car stopped in the lane ahead of him, waiting to make a left-hand turn. Mondo braked and swerved to the right onto the shoulder of the road, then pulled back into the lane. As he reached for his cellphone again, he veered onto the shoulder again and hit the cyclists, according to the CHP.
