Author Gary Schmidt to discuss children's literature

Gary Schmidt, a two-time Newbery Honor award-winning author, will give a talk about the importance of literature in a child’s education at a free community event Thursday at the Madonna Expo Center.

Schmidt will discuss the value of reading whole books to children and demonstrate how excerpt reading is selling students short in his opinion. The event is sponsored by the SLO Classical Academy.

Schmidt is the author of “The Wednesday Wars” and “Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy.” His book “Okay for Now” has been selected as NPR’s Backseat Book Club on All Things Considered.

The event will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Alex Madonna Expo Center, 100 Madonna Road in San Luis Obispo. For more details, visit www.sloclassical.org or call 548-8700.
