The St. Francis of Assisi statue on the altar at Mission San Miguel was perfectly illuminated by the rising sun Saturday, marking the annual phenomenon on the saint's feast day.

"The Illumination of St. Francis of Assisi" happened at 7:27 a.m., according to John Warren, who sent in pictures of the illumination to The Tribune.

The light from the rising sun came through the window in the choir loft at the rear of the church at just the right angle to frame the statue, according to Warren. The illumination is possible due to the precise alignment of the old Mission church that was determined by the Mission padres prior to its construction in the early 1800s.
