Members of Fire Velo, a national fire department-based bicycling club, are riding through San Luis Obispo County on Wednesday and Thursday to raise awareness of cancer related to their jobs and to honor firefighters who have been diagnosed with cancer or have died from the disease.
A portion of proceeds from the ride, now in its seventh year, will go to the International Firefighter Cancer Foundation, which offers resources to first responders and their families, according to a news release.
About 40 firefighters departed last Sunday from the Sausalito Fire Station in Marin County and plan to finish at the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday. On the way, they’ll stop at fire departments across the state.
The riders are scheduled to stop Wednesday night at the Morro Bay Fire Department and will stop at the Lompoc Fire Department in Santa Barbara County on Thursday night. They plan to have lunch Thursday in Oceano.
