Fire on Hwy 101 in Atascadero backs up traffic

UPDATE 2:25 p.m.: Both southbound lanes of Highway 101 are now open in Atascadero near Santa Barbara Road, said a CHP dispatcher. 

UPDATE 12:45 p.m.: The brush fire caused by a motor home on fire spread to about a half acre and has been extinguished by Cal Fire crews, a Cal Fire dispatcher said. The vehicle fire has also been put out. The CHP says that one southbound lane of Highway 101 is flowing but the right-hand lane remains closed.  

ORIGINAL STORY: A vehicle fire on southbound Highway 101 in Atascadero has spread to a nearby hillside and backed up traffic for about a mile, according to the CHP. Cal Fire has also responded.

The fire was reported at about 11:50 a.m. on southbound Highway 101 just south of the Santa Barbara Road on-ramp. A camper being towed by a tow truck blew a tire and then caught on fire, the CHP said.
