UPATE 11:15 a.m. The Morro Bay Fire Department confirmed that the fire at the Morro Bay Power Plant was extinguished by 10:45 Thursday morning.

According to the department, machinery abutted against the structure of the facility caught fire and was quickly extinguished by Morro Bay firefighters with assistance from Cal Fire.

Crews will be conducting cleanup at the site for the next few hours.

Original story: Emergency personnel are responding to a fire at the Morro Bay Power Plant.

The extent of the fire was not immediately known, but a large plume of black smoke can be seen in the area.

According to the Morro Bay Fire Department, crews arrived on scene at approximately 10:20 a.m. Thursday after a report of machinery on the eastern side of the plant on fire.

A Cal Fire spokeswoman said that Cal Fire crews are en route to assist, which is normal protocol.
