The northbound lanes of Highway 101 were closed for almost an hour at Grand Avenue in Arroyo Grande after an accident about 9:30 p.m. Saturday that sent at least two people to the hospital, Five Cities Fire officials reported.

Initial reports at the scene indicated a driver might have caused the accident when the vehicle entered the freeway going the wrong way on the Grand Avenue off-ramp. Three vehicles appeared to sustain significant damage, fire officials said. CHP assisted firefighters in clearing the road and moving the victims to safety. Cal Fire/Pismo Beach and Arroyo Grande police also responded.

The driver of one car had to be cut out by Five Cities Fire using the jaws of life. The driver was immediately taken to Sierra Vista hospital for treatment. A second victim was also taken to a local hospital, fire officials said.

No further details of the accident or the conditions of the victims were immediately available late Saturday.
