An 11-year-old from Morro Bay drowned at a North County farm over the weekend, authorities say.
Michael Derick “Mike” Gallegos was swimming in a small man-made lake at Star Farms in San Miguel when he went missing sometime after 5:30 p.m. Friday, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tony Perry said. Gallegos was attending a private party at the lake, Perry said.
The Sheriff’s Office received a call from the victim’s father at 5:41 p.m. reporting the boy missing; five minutes later, officers were alerted that Gallegos had been found and CPR was in progress, Perry said.
The boy was then taken by ambulance to Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton, where he arrived about 6:40 p.m.

According to Perry, Gallegos “succumbed to injuries and exposure related to the event” and was pronounced dead at 8:41 p.m.
Officers do not know the nature of the 11-year-old’s accident, and the investigation is ongoing into why he may have drowned.
“Investigators will look into whether this is beyond just a tragic accident,” Perry said. “They will pursue all avenues.”
Gallegos was a student at Del Mar Elementary School in Morro Bay. Parents and students at the school were notified of Gallegos’ death Saturday evening.
Arrangements for Gallegos are under the direction of Chapel of the Roses Mortuary in Atascadero.
