CHP vehicles, helicopter in South County were just training, officials say

California Highway Patrol activity in the San Luis Obispo and Five Cities areas Thursday morning was a simple training exercise and not in response to any emergency, the CHP announced after the exercise was completed.

The agency was conducting annual mock motorcade training, which was conducted in a way to only minimally impact traffic, according to a CHP news release. It was intended to provide a realistic environment for a possible motorcade escort of a high-profile figure through the Central Coast.

California Highway Patrol Officer Richard Lee said Thursday the training was not in preparation for any expected high-profile visit.

It was not immediately clear how many officers participated in the exercise, but those who did were on a regularly scheduled work day.

The exercise included a number of vehicles and motorcycle units, as well as a CHP helicopter.
