An electrical transformer on a power pole exploded Thursday in Arroyo Grande.

An electrical transformer that failed on a power pole in Arroyo Grande on Thursday morning temporarily knocked out power to 900 customers, PG&E spokeswoman Jana Morris said.

Authorities received a number of 911 calls reporting the sound of a transformer explosion around 11:37 a.m. at Poplar and Juniper streets, Five Cities Fire Authority spokesman Peter Klein said.

Arroyo Grande police closed Poplar Street while firefighters put out a small fire at the top of the pole and PG&E workers made repairs.

Power was restored to all but 41 customers by 12:24 p.m. and full restoration was expected by 11 p.m., Morris said.

PG&E crews were replacing the 45-foot pole, three cross arms and all equipment, including the transformer. The pole is shared with cable television and telephone companies, and their crews were also involved in repairs, Morris said.

She said the cause of the transformer failure was under investigation.
