Authorities continue to search the waters off Oceano in an effort to find an airplane that plunged into the ocean a mile offshore Tuesday afternoon. Officials have identified the man believed to be the pilot as David Brian Casey, 63, of Friday Harbor, Wash. Casey is presumed dead.
Search teams have worked throughout the daylight hours since the crash occurred to find the plane and any evidence that a second person may have been aboard, said Tony Cipolla, spokesman for the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.
“We think there might have been a second person,” Cipolla said. “We’re working to get confirmation on that.”
The search is complicated by the fact that the water is 80 feet deep where the plane is believed be, limiting the amount of time divers can spend at that depth. The Sheriff’s Dive Team is also using sonar to try to locate the plane.
