San Luis Obispo City Fire crews put out a burning load of alfalfa on the Cal Poly campus Saturday afternoon.
At about 12:30 p.m. the driver of a pickup pulling a trailer loaded with alfalfa to feed cattle on the university campus noticed flames coming from the feed, fire Capt. Matt Lipson said.
The driver pulled into a campus parking lot on Grand Avenue and unhitched the trailer as the feed was burning. Two city fire engines responded, hauling the alfalfa out of the trailer and dousing it with water, Lipson said. The soggy alfalfa was going to be left overnight in the lot with Cal Poly officials keeping watch to make sure it did not reignite, Lipson said.
The load was a total loss but no one was injured, he said. The cause of the fire was not known.
