A garbage truck whose contents caught fire dumped its blazing load on a San Luis Obispo street Friday morning.

The truck was carrying cardboard recyclables near South Higuera Street when its driver noticed smoke emanating from the back of the vehicle around 9:30 a.m.

“Things get put into dumpsters that shouldn’t be put into dumpsters” and start fires, said Battalion Chief Bob Bisson of the San Luis Obispo Fire Department.

Because fires in the back of garbage trucks can destroy the whole truck, it is acceptable for truck drivers to find a safe place to dump the load, Bisson said — in this case, on Long Street just behind The Tribune's office.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, and the trash company carried away the waste, Bisson said.
