SLO County's new top planner is a Cal Poly alum

The county has named a city planner from Sonoma County as its new director of planning and building.

The Board of Supervisors has offered the job to James Bergman, who has spent the past three years as community development director for the city of Windsor. He replaces Jason Giffen, who left the post in April.

The county is still negotiating Bergman’s contract but he is expected to start work in approximately 45 days. He will lead a staff of 90 county employees. He holds a master’s degree in city and regional planning from Cal Poly.

“Mr. Bergman’s demonstrated community engagement and collaborative style as well as his experience with complex planning issues and policy development will serve the department and the county well,” said Supervisor Bruce Gibson, chairman of the board.
