A group of 20 people gathered silently, holding signs demanding integrity, in front of City Hall on Monday to protest the reinstatement of John Ryan Mason to the San Luis Obispo City Fire Department.
Mason, who was charged with assaulting a man in a bar when off duty two years ago, was rehired by Fire Chief Charlie Hines on Wednesday.
Protester Aaron Gomez, who is friends with Jory Brigham, the man Mason was charged with assaulting, said he was outraged when he first learned that Mason would rejoin the Fire Department.
“He was an EMT who left the scene of a very violent offense and later admitted to it,” Gomez said. “He does not represent the integrity that the city is supposed to.”
