Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified the location of the body. It was found off Harford Pier, not Cal Poly Pier.
Chilly winds beat against the Harford Pier in Avila Beach on Wednesday as authorities investigated the death of a man they believe lived on one of the boats moored at Point San Luis Harbor.
Chad Henry Hebert, 37, was found floating in the water off Olde Port Beach about 9:20 a.m. Wednesday. His body showed no obvious signs of trauma, and foul play is not suspected, sheriff’s spokesman Tony Cipolla said in a news release.
Authorities believe Hebert was staying at one of the boats, which they say belonged to a relative. His kayak was found floating right side up near the pier several hours before his body was discovered.

Sheriff’s officials say Hebert likely used that kayak to travel between the boat and the beach.
Several onlookers stood on the pier Wednesday while authorities investigated the incident, but no one said they saw what happened.
An autopsy is planned, although a timeline for one wasn’t immediately available. Officials are looking
into whether drugs or alcohol played a role. No additional details were released in the investigation.
