On Tuesday and Wednesday the county’s early warning system sirens located in the Diablo Canyon emergency planning zone will undergo a regularly scheduled low volume, short duration tests.
Each of the 131 sirens throughout the zone will be tested individually for a period of a few seconds. The early warning system sirens were installed and are maintained as one of the requirements related to operating the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant.
The siren system can be used for any major local emergency where there is a need to alert large numbers of people to tune to a local radio or television station to get information related to the emergency, including actions the public may need to take.
The early warning system sirens cover an area extending from Cayucos to the north to the Nipomo Mesa area to the south. This includes the northern Nipomo Mesa, the Five Cities Area, Avila Bay, See Canyon and Squire Canyon areas, Price Canyon area, Baywood Park/Los Osos, San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay and Cayucos.
