SoCalGas outage could last several days for approximately 1,000 Atascadero customers

Approximately 1,000 Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) customers near downtown Atascadero are without natural gas today in an outage that could last several days, the company says.

Around 10 a.m. Sunday, a water main break at the intersection of Entrada and Lewis avenues damaged a neighboring gas line, and water entered the gas company’s pipeline system.

This caused the gas to be shut off to businesses and residents in the area from El Camino Real north to Sycamore Road, and from Highway 41 west to Traffic Way.

The water line was repaired by early Sunday afternoon. However, water that got into the gas lines will need to be flushed out, and gas regulators damaged by the water will need to be replaced — a process that could take several days to complete.

“SoCalGas crews will be working around the clock to make repairs,” wrote Denise King, spokesperson for SoCalGas, in an email to The Tribune.Customers may smell gas as crews purge the water from the lines, however the gas company says the area is secured and safe.

Colby Jack Cafe and Bakery in The Carlton Hotel was forced to close early today, an employee confirmed, and the hotel is relocating some guests because there is no hot water or heat.
