Grand marshals chosen for Cal Poly's Open House

Three men responsible for bringing back a longtime Cal Poly tradition have been chosen as grand marshals for the university’s 20th annual Open House, according to a press release from the university.

Stephan Lamb, Marquam Piros and Joe Sabol will be honored April 20 during the Poly Royal Parade.

The event welcomes admitted and current students to spend the weekend with the public exploring Cal Poly’s campus and programs.

Open House began in 1994 after the university's annual Poly Royal event was shut down in 1990 following rioting near campus. Lamb, Pirosand Sabol played key roles in reviving the campus showcase in new ways, according to the announcement.

Lamb worked to shift the focus to newly-admitted students who had yet to commit to the university; Piros organized the initial proposal withstudent, campus and city leaders and then lobbied for the change; while Sabol focused on a new recruitment tool for agriculture students.

This year’s Open House begins at 9 a.m. April 20 with the Poly Royal parade. The route begins at Grand Avenue and Perimeter Road, then travels north toward Via Carta and ends at Dexter Lawn, according to the press release. Seating is available along the route,

After the parade, various activities continue into the afternoon including a kids’ fair, live music, a tractor pull and rodeo.
