Members sought for committee to oversee Paso Robles roadwork spending

Paso Robles residents have until 5 p.m. Jan. 25 to apply for a spot on a committee tasked with overseeing spending of roadwork funds.

A ballot measure approved by voters in November will raise the city's sales tax by a half-cent starting April 1. A second voter-approved measure assigns the money to road maintenance and calls for a public committee to oversee the expenditures. The sales tax hike is expected to bring in $3.5 million annually for 12 years.

The City Council is slated to appoint candidates for three spots on the seven-member committee after reviewing the pool of applications and doing interviews. The council will announce interview dates in January or February. Each term is three years.

The remaining four seats will be filled from the memberships of community groups already determined by the council.

Once formed, the committee will review and advise the council on what roadwork projects people want, what has been done and future options.
