Atascadero resident Dave Guerena was honored by city officials Tuesday night for saving a woman’s life during a fire at an Atascadero apartment complex in July.

Guerena, who was awarded a heroism plaque from the Atascadero Fire Department, pulled a woman from her apartment while using a fire extinguisher to buffer them from flames.

The fire at the Bordeaux House Apartments on Rivera Lane displaced about 20 people from their homes but resulted in no major injuries.

Four units were destroyed and others were damaged.

“If it wasn’t for his fast action, we would have had a fire fatality,” Fire Capt. Bill White said at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting where Guerena was honored.

Guerena, a Caltrans employee, was humble when accepting his award.

“Any one of us could be involved in an emergency situation, and you have two options,” he said. “You either get involved or you don’t. And, if you don’t, you’ll be left with what-ifs. So get in there and help.”
