Soupabration seals the deal for docents

Where but the Central Coast can you find celebrity chefs cooking, winemakers tasting, authors signing, painters creating and jazz musicians performing — all in one place.

All this will happen at Camp Ocean Pines in Cambria on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. The event will help fund the docent program that explains to visitors from around the world the amazing life cycle of the elephant seals living loudly just north of Hearst Castle.

“I feel like a name-dropper,” says Charmaine Coimbra, suspense novelist and Friends of the Elephant Seal spokeswoman, as she explains the nonprofit’s second annual fundraiser, A Grand Ole Soupabration. “Between the celebrity chefs, the big-name Central Coast restaurants/chefs, the exclusive wineries, the nationally known authors and artists, these names are the grand ingredients for A Grand Ole Soupabration. It is a foodie event that benefits the marine environment educational mission of FES.”

Nine restaurants will prepare their best soups for judging by chef Paul Piscopo, executive chef of W San Francisco; chef Phillip Riccomini, executive chef at the Paso Robles Culinary Arts Academy; chef Dakota Weiss, “Top Chef” season nine alumnus and the executive chef at the W Westwood (she is also Coimbra’s daughter); and Bay News managing editor Neil Farrell.

Enough will be available for each attendee’s tasting, as well as for the judging. Competing restaurants include The Cavalier, Divine Street Catering, Et Voila, Lido Restaurant at Dolphin Bay Resort, Linn’s, Moonstone Beach Bar and Grill, Novo, Robin’s Restaurant and Windows on the Water.

Food Network celebrity chef Rahm Fama returns as emcee. Fama has volunteered a private chef’s dinner for eight featuring a menu from his upcoming cookbook, “Man on the Range.” Attendees can bid on this dinner during the silent auction, which also includes Weiss’ private chef’s dinner and cooking demonstration for eight, called “A Farmers Market Extravaganza.”

Cutruzzola Vineyards, Harmony Cellars, Hearst Ranch Winery, Hearthstone Winery, Sculpterra Winery and Zenaida Cellars will offer fine wines for tasting. Also on hand will be author David Helvarg, a journalist and executive director of the Blue Frontier Campaign. Helvarg’s latest book is “Saved by the Sea.” Plus, meet Los Osan Sue McGinty, a Central Coast mystery writer who bases her stories in Los Osos, Cayucos and Morro Bay; and Marianne D. Wallace, author/illustrator of a children’s natural science series, “America’s Seashore, a Guide to Plants and Animals.”

Painting in plein air style will be Central Coast artists Sue Johnson, Tish Rogers, Gay Melody Sullivan, Art Van Ryhn and Jeanette Wolff. Their works in progress will be offered during the silent auction. At 2 p.m., enjoy the personality and music of the Crustacea Jazz Band.
