A Guadalupe man is in critical condition at Marian Medical Center after a Thursday night accident on Highway 166 during which he slammedinto the back of a flatbed whose driver was slowing to make a right turn, partially sheared off the roof of his Toyota Celica, and wedgedit underneath the truck.
Luis Gonzalez, 27, was listed in critical condition Thursday night with an open skull fracture. Representatives of Marian Medical Centersaid he is still in critical condition.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Gonzalez was westbound on Route 166 just west of Black Road in his 1992 Toyota Corolla shortlybefore 9 p.m. At the same time Frederico Ortiz, 37, of Santa Maria, was also westbound near that location, driving a work truck and towinga special flatbed trailer.
“As Ortiz was making his turn,” the CHP reported, “the Toyota collided into the rear of the trailer, causing the Toyota to become wedgedunderneath. The impact partially sheared the roof top of the Toyota, causing massive damage and resulting in an open skull fracture toGonzalez.”
