Assemblyman Bill Monning has picked up the endorsements of numerous state and local educators and teachers in his bid to succeed Sam Blakeslee as the Central Coast’s representative in the California state Senate.
Monning, a Democrat from Carmel, is the only candidate who has announced his intention to run for the 17th District seat being vacated by Blakeslee, a Republican who is not running for re-election.
Democrats hold a 17-percentage-point lead in registration over Republicans, and that is a key reason Blakeslee decided not to seek re-election.
Among those announcing their support of Monning are former state Superintendent for Public Instruction Jack O’Connell, the California Teachers Association, the California Federation of Teachers and the California Faculty Association.
Monning also has the backing of San Luis Obispo County Superintendent of Public Instruction Julian Crocker, San Luis Coastal Unified School District Trustee Mark Buchman, Lucia Mar Unified School District Trustee Erik Howell and San Luis Coastal Unified School District Trustee Christopher Ungar.
The district boundaries were redrawn last year by the Citizens Redistricting Commission. It now includes Santa Cruz County, portions of Monterey and Santa Clara counties and San Luis Obispo County.
