San Miguel Scene: Hankerin’ for cactus jelly? It’s here

Cactus Jelly is now available at the Rios-Caledonia Gift Shop. The popular and delicious treat, made from nopales by the staff of volunteers, sells for $6 per jar.

The Adobe is located at 700 Mission St. in San Miguel and is open Fridays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Get ready for bingo

San Miguel senior citizens wish all their neighbors and friends a very happy new year. Bingo resumes at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 13 — your lucky day! Bingo is held on the second and fourth Friday of each month.

Pancakes are coming

The popular and delicious pancake breakfasts, held on the last Sunday of each month, will resume Jan. 29 from 8 to 11 a.m. All are welcome at the senior center on East 12th Street.

Calling young artists

The Native Daughters of the Golden West hold an annual art contest for students in grades nine through 12 from any school, to encourage interest in California history and natural wonders. Local chair is Babette Smith.

Artists are asked to depict a landmark, native wildlife or plant, or a historical event or person.

Deadline for submissions is April 1 at 5 p.m.

In memory of a friend

Our little community lost a longtime friend and community worker when Frederick Thacker died suddenly a week ago.

Thacker was a proud member of Native Sons of the Golden West. A celebration of his life is set for Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. at the Estrella Warbirds Museum, 4251 Dry Creek Road.
