UPDATE: San Luis Obispo loses a heartbreaker in football playoffs; Arroyo Grande, Templeton win

The San Luis Obispo football team lost a back-and-forth battle to Chaminade 31-27 in the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section Western Division playoffs tonight.

Tigers junior quarterback Garrett Giovannelli threw for a touchdown and ran for two more in the loss. Jacob Flores ran for one score and caught another on a pass from Giovannelli.

San Luis Obispo took the lead at 27-24 early in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles rallied behind Terrell Newby, who ran 69 yards for his third touchdown of the game to give Chaminade the lead and the win. Read more »

Arroyo Grande 49, St. Francis 28

The Eagles advanced to the semifinals for the second straight year and will play Chaminade next week.

Arroyo Grande trailed 14-9 after one quarter, rebounded for a 24-14 halftime lead and outscored St. Francis 25-14 in the second half. Read more »

Templeton 58, South Torrance 13

The Templeton High football team defeated South Torrance 58-13 in the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section Northwest Division playoffs Friday night.

The Eagles scored on a 73-yard trick play on the first play from scrimmage and never looked back, taking a 27-13 lead into halftime before outscoring the Spartans 31-0 in the second half in the blowout.

Starting quarterback Alex Elterman had two touchdown passes in the first half, one to Toney Isbell and onther to Andrew Garrettson, who threw the opening touchdown in the first quarter. Templeton backup quarterback Weston Coy threw a 14-yard passing touchdown and ran for another 14-yard score in the second half. Read more »

Third-quarter updates

The San Luis Obispo high football team has taken a 27-24 lead in the fourth quarter of its quarterfinal matchup against Chaminade in the CIF-Southern Section Western Division playoffs.

Holding a 13-8 halftime lead, the Tigers found themselves trailing 24-13 in the third quarter after the Eagles scored on a 44-yard touchdown pass and a 69-yard touchdown run by Terrell Newby, his second of the game.

Garrett Giovannelli then scored on a 1-yard run with 3:05 left in the third to cut the lead to 24-20 Chaminade, and then scored again six seconds into the fourth on a 6-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers the lead.

Templeton winning in rout

The Templeton High Football team has taken a 44-13 lead early in the fourth quarter of its quarterfinal matchup against South Torrance in the CIF-Southern Section Northwest Division playoffs.

After holding a 27-13 at the half, the Eagles added touchdown runs from Connor Truhitte and backup quarterback Weston Coy and a 21-yard field goal from Garrett Silzer.

Halftime updates

The San Luis Obispo high football team has taken a 13-8 lead into halftime in their second-round matchup against Chaminade in the CIF Southern Section Western Division football playoffs.

Jacob Flores scored twice for the Tigers in the first half, first on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Giovannelli and again on a 21-yard run early in the second quarter. Flores has 102 yards rushing in the first half.

Chaminade’s Terrell Newby has 106 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Eagles.

Arroyo Grande 24, St. Francis 14

At La Canada Flintridge, Arroyo Grande overcame a 14-9 deficit after the first quarter to take a halftime lead by outscoring St. Francis 15-0 in the second quarter.

The Arroyo Grande-St. Francis winner will play the San Luis Obispo-Chaminade winner in next week's Western Division semifinals.

Templeton 27, South Torrance 13

The Templeton High football team got a dream start in its shot at redemption tonight, leading visiting South Torrance 27-13 at halftime of a CIF-Southern Section Northwest Division playoff game.

The Eagles (6-5) scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and another early in the second to jump on the same school that beat them 35-7 in the same stadium in last year's semifinal round.

Matt Arace ran 11 times for 94 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown, to lead Templeton, which passed for three more scores.

Eagles quarterback Alex Elterman started the game 4-of-4 passing for 64 yards and two scores before throwing his first incomplete pass. Elterman hit Tobey Isbell for a 20-yard touchdown and connected with Andrew Garrettson on a 13-yarder.

Templeton scored on its first play from scrimmage when Garrettson threw the ball up to Cameron Silzer on a trick play, and SIlzer ran away from defenders for a 73-yard touchdown catch.

South Torrance (6-5) rolled up 136 rushing yards in the first half but shot itself in the foot with two costly third-down holding penalties in the first quarter and a los fumble on a kick return.

The Spartans got their first-quarter score on a 1-yard quarterback sneak following a 90-yard kick return by John Sico. Sico added a 5-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and entered the half with 69 yards on 10 carries. Colton Glandorff ran six times for 71 yards.

First-quarter recaps

The San Luis Obispo high football team has taken a 13-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter at home against Chaminade in their second-round matchup of the CIF-Southern Section Western Division playoffs tonight.

Jacob Flores punched in a 21-yard touchdown run to give San Luis Obispo the two-score lead early. Flores also caught a 12-yard pass from junior quarterback Garrett Giovannelli to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 7:43 left in the first quarter.

Templeton 27, South Torrance 6

The Templeton High football team has taken a 27-6 lead with 10:32 left in the second quarter in their second-round matchup in the CIF-Southern Section Northwest Division playoffs.

Andrew Garrettson connected on a trick-play, 73-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Silzer on the fist play from scrimmage to get the Eagles' offense rolling early.

Garrettson also caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Alex Elterman to go up 13-0, and Elterman connected with Tobey Isbell for a 20-yard touchdown that put Templeton up 20-0.

After giving up a touchdown to South Torrance, the Eagles scored again when Matt Arace exploded for a 44-yard run to the end zone, giving Templeton the 21-point lead.
