Deputies arrested a North County man after an armed standoff south of Paso Robles Sunday afternoon, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department.
Aaron Macay Henson, 32, who lives just outside Paso Robles, was taken into custody about 4:45 p.m., department spokesman Rob Bryn said.
Just after 3 p.m., deputies were summoned to a property along Santa Ysabel Avenue, just south of South River Road, where authorities were told there was a man with a rifle who went into a detached garage to kill himself, Bryn said.
Henson went in and out of the garage, Bryn said, firing over deputies’ heads at least once.
At one point it looked like Henson was responding to commands broadcast from a California Highway Patrol helicopter's public-address system, appearing to surrender and putting down his scoped his rifle for a time when he was outside, Bryn added.
But as deputies on the ground moved forward, he went back toward the rifle, Bryn added.
Deputies eventually persuaded Henson to surrender. Deputies never fired back at him, Bryn said.
Henson remained at the San Luis Obispo County Jail late Sunday, where he was being held without bail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism.
