Ceremony planned at ASH to honor psychiatric technician killed by patient in Napa

The public is invited to participate in a vigil Sunday at Atascadero State Hospital to honor Donna Gross, the psychiatric technician strangled by a patient at Napa State Hospital in October 2010.

The event is one of nearly a dozen vigils advocating for employee safety throughout California on Sunday.

Atascadero’s event will include talks by hospital workers and state legislators.

There will also be a ceremony during which the public can lay flowers in remembrance. White carnations will be provided.

Gross' death has renewed efforts to improve safety at the state's five mental hospitals, organizers say.

The vigil is planned for 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the hospital's entrance, 10333 El Camino Real.
