Students at four elementary schools in the South County will showcase some of the work they’ve created in the afterschool Bright Futures program during an event today. The “Lights on Afterschool” event, which is intended to draw attention to afterschool programs, will be at Dana, Fairgrove, Harloe and Oceano elementary schools. Students will hold performances, prepare and sell food and display some arts and crafts they’ve made in the program.
Ten schools in the Lucia Mar Unified School District participate in Bright Futures, which extends the school day with homework clubs and classes to enhance student learning.
The program is financed with state and federal grants. More than 1,000 Lucia Mar students participate in the program each day, program coordinator Linda Pierce said.
Dana Elementary will showcase its programs from 5 to 6 p.m. at 920 W. Tefft St. in Nipomo; Fairgrove Elementary will hold an open house from 5 to 6 p.m. at 2101 The Pike in Grover Beach; Harloe Elementary’s event runs from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m at 901 Fair Oaks Ave. in Arroyo Grande; and Oceano Elementary will start its event from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 1551 17th St. in Oceano.
The events are open to the public.
