Firefighters from throughout San Luis Obispo County will form a parade of equipment that will stop at 16 local schools and appear before 8,000 children on Thursday in the annual Burn Relay.
The schoolchildren will receive a fire prevention message, and the relay will culminate at the farmers market in downtown San Luis Obispo on Thursday night.
Besides teaching youths how to prevent fires, the relay is a fundraiser for the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation. Money raised funds full or partial scholarships to send a child who has been burned to Champ Camp, a week of activities and esteem building held at Wonder Valley near Fresno. The cost to send a child to the camp is $1,000.
Other programs run by the foundation are Stop, Drop and Roll; Baby Blue (which helps young families learn how to avoid scalding accidents) and a summit for young adults.
