Disaster-response trailer gets an assist from PG&E

Atascadero firefighters are closer to the goal of outfitting their grassroots-built, disaster- response trailer with all the necessary tools thanks to a new fundraising campaign spearheaded by PG&E.

In the challenge, called “$50,000 in 50 Days,” the utility will match all donations up to $25,000 that are received from Sept. 15 through Nov. 4.

“Essentially, it is a two-for- one deal,” fire Capt. Matt Miranda said. “You donate $1 and they will make it $2.”

The trailer is an all-volunteer project championed by Atascadero firefighters to dedicate one engine with donated specialized gear to assist in auto accidents, search and rescue missions, earthquakes, floods, fires and other disasters.

Having it for that purpose frees up the department’s other engines for more routine calls.

The Atascadero Fire Department applied for the PG&E assistance about six weeks ago.

It’s one more step in firefighter efforts that have raised more than $27,000 for the trailer in the past nine months.

If $50,000 is raised with the campaign, and several grants still in the works are awarded, firefighters would reach their $100,000 goal.

For more information on the trailer, contact Miranda, at 470-3320 or mmiranda@atascadero.org.

Walk-in or mail-in donations are accepted at the Atascadero Fire Department, 6005 Lewis Ave., Atascadero, CA 93422.
