An Atascadero State Hospital patient is accused of trying to rape an employee there last week, officials said Tuesday.

Leroy Charles Parker, 35, was arrested Sept. 6 on suspicion of attempted rape, kidnapping and indecent exposure, according to San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department records.

He remained in custody in County Jail, where he was being held without bail as of Tuesday night.

About 11:30 a.m. that day, Parker allegedly assaulted an employee in Unit 8 at ASH, according to a statement by hospital officials.

ASH is a state hospital that treats mentally ill inmates from the correctional system, among others.

The employee remains on leave as of Tuesday, according to the hospital.

Hospital officials would not disclose the name of the employee or the patient.

ASH doesn’t release patient names to the media because of federal laws designed to protect patient confidentiality, according to officials there.

However, the patient could be identified by County Jail booking records.

Staff “responded immediately and contained the situation,” a hospital spokesman said.

ASH officials emailed a statement to the media Tuesday after receiving inquiries about the incident. They would not disclose any other details.
