A 19-year-old San Luis Obispo man was arrested by police after he allegedly grabbed a 1-year-old baby from its mother and tried to escape with the child.

Police Sgt. Jeff Booth said officers arrested Langston James at 2:18 p.m. Tuesday near a bus stop at Osos and Palm streets.

Booth said James approached the mother and the baby, who was in a portable car seat. He grabbed the car seat and began walking away. The mother tried to stop him, and others at the bus stop came to her aid. James fell to the ground as officers arrived, and they arrested him.

The mother had minor injuries; the baby was unharmed, said Booth.

James was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and child endangerment. He was booked into County Jail in lieu of posting $500,000 bail.
