San Diego State breaks Cal Poly curse, beats Mustangs 49-21

SAN DIEGO — Ending a two-game winning streak for the Cal Poly football team in Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego State cruised to a season-opening 49-21 victory over the Mustangs on Saturday in San Diego.

Aztecs sophomore running back Ronnie Hillman had 189 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and senior quarterback Ryan Lindley passed for 203 yards and four TDs as San Diego State (1-0) scored on four of its first five possessions.

Cal Poly kept the score close for most of the first half and entered the third quarter trailing 28-14.

Senior running back Mark Rodgers had a 3-yard touchdown run, senior fullback Jake Romanelli — a former Templeton High standout — scored on a 17-yard run and junior quarterback Andre Broadous had a 2-yard touchdown run for the Mustangs (0-1).
