Atascadero Mayor Tom O’Malley said Thursday that he will not run for county supervisor next year against incumbent Jim Patterson.
Although he never formally announced his candidacy, O’Malley said he had considered it, and people asked him to run. He was widely rumored to be in the race.
However, he told The Tribune, family issues need his attention at the moment.
O’Malley will continue as Atascadero mayor. He said he would not comment on Patterson or county politics at the moment, but noted that he keeps track, and considers regional tourism to be one of the important issues facing the Board of Supervisors.
O’Malley’s decision to refrain from running leaves Patterson without an opponent as he seeks his third term, at least for now. He has announced his own candidacy.
