Condolences to the family and friends of former San Miguel Community District Manager Mike Ellison, who died July 26. He worked for the district from 2000 until his retirement several months ago.
A celebration of his life will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Old Mission Parish Community Hall behind the mission. Instead of flowers, the family is asking people to bring their memories and stories to share. Donations may be made to Firefighters for Christ at firefightersforchrist.org.
Rene Salas from Riverside has been hired as the new district manager for the Community Services District.
A well-attended meeting of local business people was held recently to discuss forming a Chamber of Commerce with a lot of interest in encouraging and enlivening town businesses.
A brainstorming session identified 10 objectives, including making the town more welcoming to different types of businesses in order to encourage local shopping.
All agreed that community involvement is crucial to community improvement in all areas. The next meeting for those interested in the chamber will be Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 10th Street Café, 249 10th St. For information, call Noel Carpenter at 857-2550 or Miki Landseadel at 975-6996.
Friends of the Garden is a community project formed to help with the large new garden Sunset Magazine is donating to Lillian Larsen School this fall.
Parents, students, staff, and the community in general are welcome. They will help make important decisions such as how the garden will be maintained, especially when school is not in session, who will do the harvesting and how produce will be shared and distributed. The next meeting is Monday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. in the teachers’ lounge. For information, call Christina Wilkerson at 467-3216, ext. 124.
