UPDATE 2:24 p.m. Monday A lit candle inside the tent caused the fire that killed James Kristopher Wadsworth on Friday night, according to the San Luis Obispo Police Department. The incident is not being investigated as suspicious.
The Sheriff’s Department has not yet released Wadsworth’s hometown.
UPDATE 1:10 p.m. Monday The man who died in the fire Friday has been identified as James Kristopher Wadsworth, 54, according to the Sheriff's Department.
Original story: A homeless man died after a late Friday night fire at his encampment near San Luis Obispo Creek near Higuera Street and Elks Lane in San Luis Obispo, according to authorities.
Firefighters found the encampment about 10:30 p.m. fully engulfed and one man with severe burns all over his entire body, according to the San Luis Obispo Fire Department.
The man died at French Hospital Medical Center soon after, the Fire Department reported in a news release.
Authorities did not disclose the man’s name.
Fire investigators are looking into the cause, according to the news release.
