UPDATE: San Simeon packages contained beach tar, official says

UPDATE 2:20 p.m. The items turned out to be beach tar, said Paul Lee, a County/Cal Fire battalion chief. The "pet package" referred to earlier was a kitty litter container.

UPDATE 12:11 p.m. The items found by an off-duty State Parks dispatcher on the beach near Balboa Avenue are “unidentified pet packages,” according to Paul Lee, a County/Cal Fire battalion chief.

Original story: County environmental officials are responding to San Simeon after a state parks worker found two boxes on the beach there, each bearing a label that said “hazardous material.”

The boxes were discovered this morning. They are wrapped in a protective tape and were lying on the sand in the San Simeon Acres neighborhood, below several condominium complexes.
