Improvements are under way at the Laguna Village Shopping Center in San Luis Obispo to ease traffic congestion and access issues.
Upgrades to the center, which is located at Madonna and Los Osos Valley Road include: the realignment and widening of the Madonna Road driveway from two lanes to four, the reinstatement of the left turn into Laguna Village from Madonna Road and the widening of the main driveway next to Burger King on Los Osos Valley Road.
The work, estimated at more than $85,000, is being paid for by Kristie Molina, owner of the shopping center.
The San Luis Obispo City Council approved the work in March 2010 after the center’s business owners lobbied for a traffic light to create an intersection between the Laguna Village driveway on Madonna Road and Pereira Drive.
The decision followed nearly six months of discussion between city staff and representatives for the shopping center, who said a traffic light would alleviate traffic congestion and improve access.
The council said it wanted all the other improvements made first to see if a traffic signal was still needed to improve traffic conditions surrounding the center.
