The Central Coast Dental Society has honored school nurses throughout the county for their work preventing cavities and providing dental care for children.
Nurses were recognized for “their dedication with school screenings of elementary school students every year.for the past 30 years.”
Working with volunteer dentists, nurses screen children for dental disease as well as growth and development problems. When they identify a dental need, they refer the children for appropriate care designed to “avoid more complicated treatments if they are not addressed,” according to a press release from the society.
The guest speaker at the event was Jennifer M. Hendershot, a board certified pediatric dentist at the Community Health Centers of the Central Coast.
Hendershot earned her doctoral degree at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and her Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry as well as her MS in Oral Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Her fellowship in pediatric dentistry had a special emphasis in public health.
