Youngsters took part in elaborate activity stations related to classic stories this weekend at the Portola Inn in Atascadero. Among the attractions Saturday were Black Beauty’s blacksmith shop, a Treasure Island treasure hunt and Mary Poppins’ ice cream parlor. Organizers read the books to keep activities authentic to the classic tales.
The Friends of the Atascadero Library organized the first Central Coast Children’s Classic, which is intended as an annual event. It drew 52 local volunteers, plus student groups from Atascadero High School. Various items were also donated from the community.
“This library expansion has been a great way to bring different segments of the community together,” volunteer Leigh Livick said.
The friends group is fundraising for larger library digs at 6555 Capistrano Ave. The goal is to raise $1 million in the next two years to complete the interior of the building.
