19 turkeys found dead in Nipomo may have been killed by dogs

The Sheriff’s Department now believes that dogs may have killed 19 turkeys Wednesday morning at Nipomo High School.

The department said necropsies of the birds show puncture wounds consistent with a predatory attack, most likely by a dog. Surveillance videos showed two dogs at the scene of the attack early that morning. A faulty lock on the gate to the cage area may have enabled the dogs to enter, the Sheriff's Department said in a news release.

Investigators will continue to review the surveillance video and have not ruled out the possibility of human involvement.

The turkeys were being groomed by FFA students who kept them in cage.

There were 22 turkeys in the cage. Two others were injured, and a third is missing.
