UPDATE: Magnitude 3.9 earthquake recorded off the coast of southern Monterey County

The earthquake has been downgraded to a magnitude 3.9.

Original story:

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake hit off the coast of southern Monterey County just before 5 a.m. Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake's epicenter was about 5 miles northwest of Lopez Point, and 22 miles southeast of Point Sur, according to the USGS.

Lopez Point is near the town of Lucia, and about 40 miles north of San Simeon.

The quake had a depth of about 6 miles.
