Diablo Canyon reactor shut down because of pump problem

One of Diablo Canyon Power Plant’s nuclear reactors was shut down over the weekend to repair a feed-water pump.

Unit 2 was shut down at 2:49 p.m. Saturday when monitoring equipment indicated there was a problem with the pump.

The pump is in the non-nuclear, turbine side of the plant and supplies water to the unit’s steam generators.

The reactor will remain offline until repairs are complete.

It is not known how long the repairs will last, plant spokesman Kory Raftery said.

The other unit continues to operate at full power.

Plant managers say the monitoring equipment worked as designed and operators followed the correct procedures for shutting the unit down.
