A 100-foot section of bluff in Pismo Beach has broken off the cliff near Dinosaur Caves Park, exposing an abandoned ConocoPhillips gas pipeline and prompting city officials to stretch caution tape across the area.
The incident happened Monday about 3 p.m. and crews had barricades up shortly after 4 p.m. that day, said Ben Fine, associate civil engineer with the city’s public works department.
The bluff crumbled along a section between the park and a Best Western hotel along Price Street. ConocoPhillips representatives viewed the exposed pipeline today, Fine said.
Caution tape has been set up to keep people from walking near the end of the bluff, but the sidewalk nearby is open, he said.
The city has been working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to stabilize some areas that have been threatened by bluff erosion.
